Classic Halloween costumes never go out of style. Every year new costumes become available but the classic skeleton, mummy, witch, vampire, and ghost are always a mainstay. Make a child's costume with little effort or money.

Common Classic Halloween Costumes

Ghost

Buy or use an old white bed sheet and drape over the child's body. Find the eye and mouth area. Sketch the design of the eye and mouth with pencil on the sheet. Cut out the design. Drape the sheet over the child again, to ensure they are able to see and breath. Next trim the bed sheet according to their size. Ideal ghost trim are wavy lines.

Mummy

Buy or use an old white or linen coloured bed sheet. Tear into strips rather than cut. Tear by making a small cut with scissors and then pull apart. Torn sheets gives a more authentic look. Hot glue the strips to old pajamas or a track suit. Glue the strips vertically and have a few strips falling off the suit.

For the face cover with white face cream or dust with baby powder. Trace the lower eyelid with a cosmetic black pencil and smudge.

Skeleton

Sketch rib bones, leg bones, arm bones, and pelvic bones to white fabric such as an old pillow case. The bones should be the appropriate size of the child. Outline the bones in dark permanent marker. Next cut out the bones out and glue or sew to an old black track suit. Add a few details to the bones by gluing the odd cobweb or spider for a creepier effect.

Vampire Boys

Line the lips with dark eyeliner pencil and smudge towards the center. Put red lipstick on his lips. For the fangs, get the cheap ones for the mouth but they only last a few minutes because they are uncomfortable. For a little extra add two fangs to the canine teeth. Fang teeth are found at your local Halloween store or online. Last touch is to gel the hair back.

Vampire Girls

Dress in a velvet dress of any colour. Tie a short cape around her shoulder. For the face cover with white face cream or dust with baby powder. Last touch is paint her nails black and highlight her eyes with deep eyeshadow colours like purple and green.

Witch

Buy a cheap black dress at a local department store or thrift shop. Another option for the child to wear a black skirt with a black top. Next buy funky looking leotards or stockings. Purple or green striped are the ideal colours for a friendly witch. Purchase a hat at the local Halloween store and lend her the family broom.

Get kids involved in making their costume and add a few details to make it unique. Minimize store bought costumes, rather buy accessories that will accent their classic Halloween costume.
